Building an Octopus
I decided that my Birthday this year was a good excuse to assemble a party. It seemed like a good excuse to be creative in a different way than my usual. Unfortunately, one of the more ambitious ideas for it came to me kind of late so i was only able to complete a small part of it.

I decided rather late one night that in the colorful glow of party lights, black paper cutout art could look pretty bitchin’. Even if it was just made of say, taped together poster board. So minutes later I was checking out with a stack of it (and some gum.)
I knew right away that the centerpiece of this project would be a re-creation of the octopus from the old Nintendo Game & Watch. If I had time and supplies left, I’d explore other subjects.

I drew the entire thing with a silver color pencil across four full sheets of the poster board. The main body was just chopped out with scissors.

Then the details inside the big chunks were cut out with an X-Acto knife.

It was a little sloppy, but I reminded myself that the light would be low and alcohol would be served.

Stitching the main body together took some precision taping skills.

Annnnnd, presto. Octopus.
I started on a giant game of Tetris as well, but ran out of time. The viruses from Dr. Mario were also a consideration, but it wasn’t a Nintendo themed party so I drew the line with octopus.

Tetris would have been cool! Especially with like neon colors! The octopus was great though!
